Dugtrio is unique among other revenge killers as due to its ability in Arena Trap, which prevents any grounded, non-Ghost-type Pokemon without Shed Shell from switching out. Its high base 120 Speed paired with a Choice Scarf and with STAB Earthquake let it smack premier threats in the Ubers tier such as Zacian-C , Eternatus , and most Choice Scarf users like Galarian Darmanitan .
With the banning of Arena Trap, Dugtrio is left in a rather unfortunate situation where it was OU by usage but is by no means a viable OU Pokemon. It is outclassed by other Ground-types such as Landorus-T and Excadrill that have options to boost their Attack or Speed with greater efficiency than Dugtrio. While Dugtrio also sports utility moves such as Memento and Stealth Rock, it is severely outdone by.
While Dugtrio is still one of the fastest Pokemon in OU and can conceivably revenge kill Pokemon like Jirachi, Excadrill, and Tyranitar, in most cases Dugtrio won’t be strong enough to be effective. Earthquake in sand is only just strong enough to 3HKO 252/48+ Ferrothorn , to give you an idea of what you’re working with here (only marginally stronger than maximum Attack Leftovers Landorus-T , for reference).
2/22/2020 · After Arena Trap was banned in Gen 5, Dugtrio’s usage plummeted. It is completely unviable, and is utterly outclassed by Excadrill. It’s smogon page also talks about how useless it is in OU. However, it states that it is OU instead of UUBL or a lower tier.
Donphan can take anything Dugtrio tries to throw at it and just hit it back with a STAB Earthquake of its own. Forretress can set up Spikes and take little damage with its massive Defense. Skarmory is immune to two of Dugtrio’s attacks and isn’t weak to the third. Gligar is in the same boat as Skarmory, except it ‘only’ resists Sludge Bomb.
